Uncovering the Unconscious: A Psychoanalytic Analysis of Encanto

In the movie Encanto the main problem is that the Madrigal family has to deal with a lot
of pressure to be perfect and they hide their feelings. Mirabel, who does not have any
powers shows us the tension that is inside the family. Because she does not have any
powers she represents the parts of themselves that the Madrigals do not want to accept.
The Madrigals are very proud of their powers, which are like the perfect versions of
themselves. Mirabel not having any powers causes conflict inside her and the family
because she shows them the things they do not want to see.

The Madrigal family members hide their feelings to seem perfect because of what
Abuela Alma expects from them. For example Luisa has strength but it is like the weight
of everyones expectations that she has to carry.. Isabelas perfect flowers mean that she
wants to be free and not perfect all the time. These special powers are like ways for them
to deal with their anxiety. The magical house is like the familys shared feelings it reacts
to their emotions. As the tension inside the family grows the house starts to break just
like the family is breaking down.

Abuela Alma is in charge of the family and she puts a lot of pressure on them she is like
the voice that makes them follow rules and does not let them be vulnerable. Her past has
been very painful. That is why she needs to be in control, which she does by putting a lot
of expectations on her family. This creates a situation where the family members do not
feel like they can express their emotions, which leads to a lot of conflict. The end of the story shows that the family can heal if they face and accept their struggles. When
Mirabel helps Abuela Alma deal with her grief the family starts to accept their emotions.
The house starts to rebuild. This ending shows us that it is very important to be aware of
our feelings and to be honest about them so we can be whole.

The idea of repression helps me understand the movie "Encanto" because many
characters in the movie hide their feelings to meet the expectations of others. This idea
is important because it explains how hiding our emotions can create conflict and
eventually lead to problems if we do not deal with them. The Madrigal family and their
story show us what happens when we hide our feelings and the importance of being
true, to ourselves and expressing our emotions.
